Ride 20160316 to library for meeting 41F and rain - no fun

Ride to library for a meeting with town manager.  41F and raining.  Good news, it can be done.  Bad news, not fun.  I used the throttle liberally to get there and home quickly.

Here's what it was like:

Assabet loop ride 20160311

Nice warm day to ride the Assabet loop.  Here's a map of the reserve.

The ride is nice enough with the exception of Taylor Way.  Crushed stone was spreed in some of the sandy areas.  It's better than the sand but VERY rough to ride on.  I spoke to the maintenance people. They are aware of the issue and hope to be able to improve it.

Here's video from the ride.

It stops abruptly when the camera battery gave out after about 90 minutes.  I've changed the camera location and setup an external battery so this shouldn't be a problem (hopefully).

Bike ride 20160309: Library errand

Library run to return some books and videos.

Mounted camera on helmet.  It's OK but I think I'll move it back to the bike as I'm frequently looking at the mirrors and the video is a bit jumpy.

Much of the ride was at 18 - 22 MPH.  The electric assist really helps particularly going up hills.

From time to time you'll see me look over to my left mirror to check oncoming traffic.  That's what makes the video jump so much. When riding on somewhat busy roads it is necessary to 'ride the mirror' since even at speeds around 20 MPH cars will pass.

I'm always a bit concerned when riding busy roads as bikes are still infrequent on roads and few drivers are able to judge bike/trike speeds to pass safely. Of necessity I've adopted a 'take the lane' strategy. Given my speed, road conditions, and shoulder conditions if I can not be passed safely or do not have a place to bail out I take the entire lane and if need be block trailing traffic. It's not that I want to delay anyone but a response to the simple reality that if there is an accident I get the worst of it.

Fortunately, most drivers are actually very reasonable.

Steintrike Wild One eTrike Conversion

The conversion work for the trike is complete and I've finished the build videos and posted them on several recumbent related Facebook sites.  Here are the videos:
